COZUMEL
Mexico’s largest inhabited island is one of the top dive destinations in the world with a chain of magnificent reefs protected by a National Marine Park. Visibility is as high as 200 feet and marine life is abundant. Reefs of note are Paraíso, Chankanaab, La Herradura, San Francisco, Yucab, Santa Rosa, Colombia and the largest of all, Palancar, famous for its coral buttresses, caves and walls. There are dives for beginners and experts, and the snorkeling is excellent in shallow areas.
Places of interest on dry land include island capital, San Miguel, a shoppers’ paradise and site of the Cozumel Museum, Chankanaab and Punta Sur Parks. San Gervasio, the largest archaeological zone on the island (there are 25 of them), is testimony to the importance of the island during the pre-Hispanic period when it was the site of a shrine to the Mayan goddess, Ixchel and an important port of call on the Caribbean trade route.
Thomas More offers you exciting trips to Cozumel. We'll drive you to the resort community of Playa del Carmen (1 hour south of Cancun), where you will board the boat bound for Cozumel and the beach club that will be your base for the day. According to the option chosen you can relax on the beach, go snorkeling, Jeep driving, visiting Chankanab Park or if you prefer to see the reefs without getting wet, you can hop on the Sub Sea Explorer, a semi-submarine. After lunch there’s time for shopping and sightseeing in San Miguel.
On the return trip to the mainland look out for dolphins. They sometimes accompany the boat.
