A Touch of Merida Magic
All roads lead to Merida, at least that’s what they say in the Yucatán and they might be right. Merida is a thriving cultural, educational and commercial center and has over 450 years of history to delight its visitors. Indeed, the city was founded in 1542 by Spanish conquistador Francisco Montejo, on the ruins of a much earlier Mayan capital called T’ho. If you haven’t visited the city, why not plan a trip during your next vacation? Take a break from the fast-paced ambiance of Cancun and experience the provincial charm, colorful traditions and warm hospitality of Merida.
Highlights of a trip to Merida include exploring a stunning collection of churches and convents, civic buildings and mansions dating from the 16th century right through to the first years of the 20th century. A good place to start is the main square, which is dominated by the massive 16th-century San Idelfonso Cathedral, and continue your walking tour along Calle 60 with its quiet churches and tree-lined squares.
A visit to the city’s museums is recommended and bargain hunters will love shopping for handicrafts in the markets. The best way to see Merida is from a calesa or horse-drawn carriage, and the driver will take you all the way along the elegant Paseo Montejo Boulevard. You cannot leave the Yucatan without sampling the local cuisine and Merida boasts something for every taste and occasion, from informal open-air cafes to elegant courtyard restaurants. To cap it all, there’s a different concert or cultural event every night and Merida en Domingo is a famous gala of music, dance, cuisine, handicraft and art exhibitions, which takes place in the city center every Sunday.
Located just two blocks from the main square, the El Castellano hotel is your Merida home away from home and a comfortable base from which to explore the Yucatan. Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the ancient Mayan cities of Uxmal and Chichen Itza and the colonial port of Campeche, lie within two hours of Merida, an attraction few cities in the world can boast. Other attractions include a host of smaller archaeological sites, nature reserves, caves and cenotes, haciendas, churches and traditional communities.
Make reservations at El Castellano by emailing reservations@elcastellano.com. Thomas More Travel offers a 2-day, 1-night break to Merida, (staying at the El Castellano hotel) and Uxmal. Private trips can also be arranged if you would like to stay longer.
