Overview

On Holbox island is only one small village, where less than 1500 calm and friendly inhabitants make their living from the sea, some of them catch enormous sharks, swordfish and barracuda, and descend depths of to 130 feet in order to catch the so delicious and prized lobsters.

Local fishermen offer trips around the Yalahau lagoon to see huge gatherings of all kind of birds like flamingos, white and brown pelicans and herons can often be spotted. Holbox is part of the Yum Balam Reserve where you will see huge gatherings of all kind of birds.

During the summer time there are special tours taking groups to sight up close the huge but inoffensive creatures, the whale sharks that come down to the water of the Gulf of Mexico every Summer. You can even splash and snorkel with them, since they only eat plankton.
