A hidden treasure lies just off the north coast of the Yucatán in the Gulf of Mexico; the island of Holbox is a magical spot for an unforgettable day. It is a haven for nature lovers, fishermen and visitors who like to get off the beaten track.
From your resort, we drive north to the port of Chiquilá where we board the small boats that will take us across the Yalahau Lagoon to begin our adventure.
Part of the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve, the lagoon and the surrounding mangrove forest and marshes are rich in wildlife. You’ll see cormorants and osprey during your crossing to the island and you may even be lucky enough to spot wild dolphins.
First stop is the Ojo de Agua, an open cenote or pool in the mangroves that is also a natural spring with fresh water bubbling up from an underground river. Then it’s on to Isla Pasión where a small and shallow lagoon and a sand bank make it possible to walk to the island of Holbox. This area is a feeding ground for flamingos and a variety of other birds including herons and egrets, pelicans, cormorants and frigate birds.
The boats will tie up on the Holbox waterfront where lunch will be served at a restaurant overlooking the beach. Then it’s time to board a golf cart to explore the island. The first 30 minutes are guided and then you have 90 minutes to yourself. Start in the picturesque fishing village of Holbox where pastel-colored wooden houses line the sandy streets. Then drive along the island for breathtaking views of white-sand beaches, the Gulf of Mexico and the wetlands in the distance.
After you have returned the golf cart, stroll along the beach where boats rock gently at their moorings, fishermen mend their nets and pelicans and terns dive for fish. Enjoy a drink at one of the thatched beach bars and remember all the amazing things you have seen during the day.
You’ll be back in your resort in time for dinner and more incredible vacation experiences.
