Summer visitors to the Mexican Caribbean have a once in a lifetime opportunity to come face to face with the largest fish in the world, the whale shark! From mid May to mid September, these gentle giants gather in an area of the sea between Isla Mujeres, Contoy and Holbox to
feed on plankton and fish eggs. To see them glide through the waters and swim alongside them is an incredible experience.
Thomas More Travel offers Whale Shark trips for groups of up to 10 people (a minimum of six people is required) during the season. En route to the whale shark area, your guide will tell you about these mysterious ocean-going wanderers and what scientists are learning about them. He/she will also go over the rules for your whale shark swim. The use of life jackets is obligatory, only two people per boat plus the guide are allowed in the water at one time and you swim beside them, always keeping your distance.
